Thistle Systems has completed the refurbishment of a 5 storey office development in Edinburgh on behalf of the Girl Guides after successfully winning the contract via competitive tender.
The aim was to create an office environment that boasted all of the mod cons required to meet the challenges of today’s economy whilst retaining the original features of the stunning Georgian building.
Thistle Systems’ interiors team carried out the upgrade works to every office, including rewiring, installation of new lighting, floor strengthening, decoration, new floor coverings and the creation of new toilet and kitchen areas.
The team also transformed the entrance to the rear of the offices to create DDA compliant access ramps and restored the stunning glass dome in the main stairwell to create a real feature for the office development.
And as you would expect from Thistle, the team designed a works schedule and project plan which ensured the organisation could continue to operate as normally as possible and with minimum disruption.
Thistle Systems’ Project Manager, Paul Hayes, explained “We were delighted with the finished project and proud to have created a spectacular office development which the client is over the moon about.”
He continued, “With the design and age of the building, there were a few challenges which needed to be overcome to bring the facilities up to the standards expected by the client, however we were able to bring the project in on time and within budget.”
Thistle Systems has used its expertise in industrial fit outs to design, manufacture and deliver a heated viewing area for a specialist riding school for the disabled in Fife.
Working with the management team made up from a group of volunteers, Thistle Systems designed a specialist free standing office area within the riding school so that friends and family could watch the children and adults enjoy the special time they had with the horses.
The Thistle project team prebuilt the panels offsite to minimise disruption to the operations of the riders and then carried out the complete internal works including, heating, ceiling and floor finishings.
Thistle Systems Project Manager, Paul Hayes, explained “We were delighted to be able to be involved in this project for such a worthwhile charity and hopefully we have been able to add to the overall experience for friends and families.”
He continued, “With costs a key concern, we used a similar approach to the prefrabricated office areas we regularly install in to industrial units. These modular systems are quick and easy to install, however can be completely customised internally to deliver whatever the project demands.”

Thistle Systems has demonstrated its commitment to providing an awesome customer service and incredible project management skills by carrying out a complete office refurbishment programme in less than 18 hours for a major city centre taxi firm.
Using their Max the Cube approach which aims to maximise the available capacity using the minimum of floor space, Thistle Systems were able to design a solution that increased the number of desks by 20% within the same square footage.
The client also asked the Thistle Systems team to design a solution which optimised the work space and allowed the team leader to be located in the heart of the office to help coordinate calls and improve service.
Thistle Systems presented a solution which ticked every box on the client brief and featured new ceilings, new lighting new floor coverings, new desks and a complete re-decoration, however the challenge was extended when the client asked for the entire works to be completed in one day.
Thistle Systems developed and implemented a project plan with military precision which began with the strip out at 7am on a Sunday morning and finished with the final touch up of paint at 11pm on the Sunday evening.
Thistle Systems’ Project Manager, Jamie Greig, explained “This was a project that many interior fit out contractors would have allowed 3-4 days to complete, however thanks to a highly committed team, the assistance of our superb supplier network and a few grey hairs, we were able to achieve everything in 1 day.”
He continued, “Our programme of works was so finely tuned that we had activities and deliveries scheduled down to minutes as opposed to hours with a queue of vans coming in and out of the office. Thankfully everything went to plan and there were no surprises at the strip out stage.”
