Free Racking Factsheets – The Pros and Cons of Racking
Thistle Systems has launched 5 new racking factsheets as part of its Max the Cube initiative which aims to help companies to maximise their available space whilst minimising the space and the associated costs.
The factsheets provide clients with a quick overview of each storage solution as well as the key benefits and considerations that clients should be aware of prior to making an investment in their storage facility.
The fact sheets cover its innovative radio shuttle as well as pallet live racking, push back racking, drive in racking and mobile racking.
Thistle Systems Managing Director, Mike Cairns, explained “We believe that every client should know the pros and cons of all the available solutions BEFORE they make a final decision. This must include the storage capacity within the floor space, the impact on operational costs, the flow of goods, how the people interact and access the products, safety and of course sustainability.”
Mike continued, “In many cases, a storage facility will use a number of types of storage solutions to improve the performance of the operations as well as maximise the available capacity.”
To reinforce the importance of design in the storage solution, each factsheet comes with a health warning which urges clients to take advantage of a free Max the Cube assessment of potential opportunities.
Thistle Systems has installed a Mobile Racking system with 945 pallet positions in a new cold store for Galloway Sea Foods as part of their £4million investment in their facilities at Newton Stewart.
Thistle’s design excellence and overall management support enabled the company to win the project via competitive tender, which involved 3 different pallet types and the brief to maximise storage capacity of finished products with set requirements for raw materials and tubs.
Thistle’s mobile racking solution achieved the specified pallet positions for the raw materials and tubs, however through careful design and the use of different beam types to suit the relevant pallet types, they were able to deliver an impressive 465 pallet positions of finished goods.
And as with any mobile racking system, health and safety was a key design feature with safety light beams across all entrances which automatically shut off the system as soon as the beam is broken. The system also featured a reset button within the pallet aisle which forces the user to enter the area and check that the aisle is clear before the system is re-started.
Thistle System’s Project Manager, Jim Young, explained “Maximising the capacity of any storage facility is always of prime importance, however the initial investment and ongoing running costs of cold store facilities means that mobile racking is normally the preferred solution.”
He continued, “Rather than providing a standard run of racking which could accommodate any of the pallet sizes, we worked closely with the client and the architect on the project to understand what they were storing and most importantly how the products were being accessed. This additional work at the front end enables us to design a bespoke solution which featured various beam types and heights to maximise the capacity.”
