Thistle Enable 1.6 Million Medical Records to be Stored for GGHB 

North Glasgow Division (NGD) is delighted to see the completion of its Westway development in Renfrew where Thistle Systems has designed and installed a storage solution that will accommodate over 1.6 Million Medical Records

Thistle Systems were called in when the availability of accommodation for the storage of non-active patient case notes had reached a critical situation on all sites across NGD.

Many of the Division's stores were in outdated buildings which presented health and safety issues that took time and resource to manage on an ongoing basis. A number of storage areas were required for other purposes, most critically, to progress the Acute Services Strategy. As well as the health and safety risks, it was difficult, time consuming and demotivating for staff to retrieve records from the many storage libraries.

Radiology faced a similar challenge to health records in terms of the shortage of space within hospital sites to store x-ray files across NGD so the health records team had been working with radiology to find a solution that suited both services.

The key challenge was to find a secure facility that would allow the Division to bring together all non-active records (circa 1.3 million) and x-rays (circa 350,000) into one location. This would deliver the economies of scale both in terms of the costs associated with IT, telecommunications and transport and maximising the use of health records personnel.
